This diorama was commissioned to accompany the Alphonse de Neuville painting of the defence of Rorke’s Drift. It was limited to 15 inches deep due to shelf size. I decided to show the hospital as the main backdrop to the diorama (the painting shows the hospital on fire) and then to show the 24th in defence with the Zulus attacking up a slope.
The diorama contains 71 figures (and a dog!). The hospital is made with a plywood shell which has had 3d printed stone texture added to it.
The diorama was mounted on a thick oak base with a 4mm acrylic display case covering it.
A similar size of diorama to this would cost £1500.
